Long-Term Recovery Group receives $1.75M grant
COCKE COUNTY — The Cocke County Long-Term Recovery Group (LTRG) has been awarded $1,757,829.53 through Gov. Bill Lee’s Response and Recovery Fund to advance the ongoing recovery efforts in Cocke County and the City of Newport.
The $1.75 million in grant funds will be used for critical debris removal, gravel and topsoil/grass seed restoration on properties that were affected by the flooding caused by Tropical Storm Helene last September.
“The funding represents a major milestone in our mission to support Cocke County’s recovery and resilience. It is a direct result of tireless collaboration among dozens of dedicated partners working at every level, from local citizens, churches, nonprofits and governments to national disaster organizations,” said Cocke County LTRG Executive Director Spring Duckett.
She explained that the grant was submitted in partnership with United Way of East Tennessee Highlands, which is a partner and fiscal agent for the LTRG.
The LTRG started forming in November after the September flooding, but officially launched as a 501©3 and began operating fully earlier this year.
The organization is the result of “local organizations and community leaders working together to coordinate a unified long-term recovery effort,” Duckett said.
“This generous grant from the State of Tennessee is a testament to the power of partnership in overcoming adversity. It will significantly bolster our long-term recovery initiatives, allowing us to build a more resilient future for everyone impacted by the recent disaster. The United Way remains committed to strengthening our region by supporting long-term disaster recovery efforts,” said Regional Director of Disaster Recovery at United Way of East Tennessee Highlands Kat Latham.
The Cocke County LTRG is a VOAD {span}(Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) structured nonprofit built under the guidance of national leaders in disaster recovery, including the American Red Cross, United Methodist Committee on Relief, Lutheran Disaster Response and Disaster Services Corporation.
Almost 50 collaborative partners are brought together through the LTRG, and they represent local, regional, state and national entities, all of which are committed to the county’s long-term recovery from the flooding.
According to Duckett, the Cocke County LTRG is appreciative of the East Tennessee Foundation, whose support has been crucial to making the group’s work possible. She said their continued investment in the community led recovery has helped by laying the foundation for long-term solutions that are sustainable.
